Even though I was well educated and experienced in wealth management (there is actually very little training in my field regarding college financial planning) - my clients were getting into huge trouble with college debt- prior to my becoming a specialist (one family racked up $100K between their son's undergrad at Wesleyan University and law school at St. John’s University). Yet still the commonly given advice about borrowing so much was not to worry, because “It will work out.”
Guess what, it didn’t magically work itself out. To call this situation stressful and crippling
doesn’t even begin to describe how my client's debt impacted them. Even today, these old
issues crop up in weird, unexpected places.
Now, I’m the mother of six. Tom, my husband, and I have sworn a blood oath that our kids will
NEVER go through anything remotely like what I’ve seen families suffer through. In a sense,
my career as a college planner chose me instead of the other way around.
